A Clean Chimney is a Safe Chimney
The CSIA recommends sweeping your chimney annually. Annual sweepings not only ensure that your chimney and fireplace are clean, but they help prevent hazards. When chimneys get dirty, they produce a substance called creosote. Creosote build up is hazardous because it is combustible, meaning it can catch your chimney on fire.
Chimney blockages can also cause issues with airflow. Smoke, gases and warm air produced in your fireplace need a path out of your home. If your chimney is even partially blocked, the byproducts produced by burning a fire may enter your home instead of up and out of your chimney. A smokey home is the last thing you want to deal with during the holidays. Another byproduct of burning wood and gas fuel, carbon monoxide, can cause serious illness or even death.
