Restore Your Damaged Liner & Save Money With HeatShield®

When damage is done to your clay tile liner — be it due to moisture from a chimney leak, age, house settling, house fire, or the corrosive properties of creosote — the last thing you want to do is have your entire liner removed and replaced. It’s messy, time-consuming, and costly, but that’s not your only or even your best option for restoring your flue. Here at Leonard & Sons, we recommend HeatShield® to our customers with damaged clay tile liners. What is HeatShield® and why are we such big fans?

HeatShield® is a system that was designed to bring new life to old clay liners, by filling and sealing dangerous holes and cracks and providing a smoke-tight surface that’s draft-friendly. There are a few different application options, so depending on how much damage your liner has, we’ll suggest one of the following flue liner restoration options:

  • Crack or joint repair — When you have a single cracked flue tile or a damaged mortar joint here and there, we’ll likely opt for the first application type. Once the liner is cleaned and prepped, we’ll put the HeatShield® cerfractory sealant directly onto the damaged area and smooth and spread using a foam applicator.
  • Resurfacing — When your flue is damaged in multiple places and could really use repair all over, we’ll likely opt for the second application type. Once the liner is cleaned and prepped, we’ll pour the Heatshield® cerfractory sealant into the flue, using a foam applicator to spread and smooth the product evenly over the surface.
  • Relining — If the damage is really extensive and has somewhat compromised the strength and integrity of the chimney, we may suggest reinforcing your chimney with the relining application. Once the liner is cleaned and prepped, we’ll pour the HeatShield® cerfractory sealant into the flue, using a foam applicator to spread and smooth the product evenly over the surface. Next, we’ll slip a metal sleeve into the flue and then repeat the HeatShield® cerfractory sealant application, insulating the sleeve between two layers of sealant.

After each and every repair, we’ll check our work using our flue video scanning equipment.
