What Happens if a Chimney Cap or Cover Is Missing?

Without these important components sitting atop your chimney, chimney flues are left open to whatever – and whoever – wants to come in. What does that mean for you?

  • Damaging chimney leaks
  • Unwanted bird, raccoon, squirrel, or other animal houseguests
  • Flammable flue obstructions like nesting materials, twigs, and leaves

All of the above can shorten the service life of your chimney system, lead to costly repairs, and lessen your enjoyment of your fireplace or stove.

Chimney caps, custom chase covers, and rain pans help by preventing water from entering the chimney. Without a cap or cover, a 12×12 flue will allow one gallon of water per inch of rain into your flue, where it can cause a host of problems, including damaged flue tiles or rusted flue liners, corroded dampers, rusted out fireboxes, and water-damaged walls and ceilings.

What’s The Difference Between Chimney Caps & Rain Pans/Chase Covers?

First things first…are chase covers and rain pans the same thing? Yes, they’re just two terms that refer to the same metal chimney covering. Now what’s the difference between a chimney cap and chase cover/rain pan?

  • Chimney Caps: These cover the flue itself, keeping animals and moisture from entering this otherwise vulnerable – and wide open – area. They are made of copper, stainless steel, or terra cotta, and they attach to the top of the flue (but should be fitted by a professional to ensure a tight seal).
  • Custom Chase Covers or Rain Pans: These are designed to cover the entire top of the wood chase – similar to how a chimney crown would cover the opening of a masonry chimney. Chase covers do not cover the flue opening itself, but keep moisture from entering the rest of the chimney. Quality chase covers and rain pans are made of stainless steel, which is capable of taking on season after season of weather.
